Galgorm Wood is one of The Woodland Trust’s 'Woods On Your Doorstep' woodlands, created to commemorate the Millennium. A mature woodland, the Trust has improved the site by increasing public access and restoring old pond habitats.
Keel Wood (Ballymena) - 17.74 acres
One of 50 'Woods on Your Doorstep' sites in Northern Ireland. The local community helped with the design and planting in early 2000. The wood borders both sides of the River Braid and is a haven for wildlife and visitors alike. Well maintained pathways
Monkstown Wood (Newtownabbey) - 21.99 acres
Monkstown Wood was designated a Local Nature Reserve in 2007 and provides a calm, green haven in a busy urban area in Newtownabbey, Northern Ireland. Thanks to funding from Biffa Award and Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, this little gem is undergoing a facelift. New and improved access, pathways and way-markers will lead you through this quiet corner of nature. As you wander, look out for four life-like oak sculptures and take in the beauty of the neighbouring river – the stunning Three Mile Water.
Oalfield Glen (Carrickfergus) - 21.89 acres
Explore this enchanting little woodland glen and you’ll come across fascinating birdlife, sculptures of mythical creatures peering from the trees, and reminders of its past as the gardens of a Victorian country house. Surfaced paths provide easy access for all abilities, and it’s just 15 minutes’ walk from town.
Old Warren Woodland (Lisburn) - 4.84 acres
Planted in consultation with the local community as a 'Woods on Your Doorstep' project, this wood has a mixture of native broadleaf trees including willow, alder and birch in wetter areas, with oak, horse chestnut and ash throughout.
Seaview Wood (Seacourt, Larne) - 3.61 acres
Seaview Wood, named by local children, has panoramic views over the Irish Sea and the coast, with a telescope beside the entrance to take full advantage! There are signs by the main entrance on Britannia Crescent and a path loops through the wood.
The Drum (Cargan) - 20.73 acres
The Drum is one of The Woodland Trust’s 'Woods On Your Doorstep' woodlands, created to commemorate the Millennium. It lies on the southern slopes of Slievenanee Mountain in the north of Glenravel, above Cargan village. It was planted with 15,000 native trees, and features open areas where raptors hunt, and small pools where frogs spawn.
Throne Wood (North Belfast) - 13.52 acres
This lovely mature woodland offers an oasis of beauty and tranquillity close to the northern edge of Belfast’s suburbia. It has a wonderful mix of wildlife, including seven types of bat, as well as spring flowers, ponds and open glades.
