Wedding photographic styles break down into two main categories: traditional and photojournalistic.
Traditional:
Traditional Photography is the style of wedding photography, which was the earliest to develop. Today it is called “traditional” because it’s been around the longest and is probably the most common. In the early days of wedding photography, the style was to create wedding portraits where people posed for the camera. Posed photos are the main hallmark of traditional wedding photography. The photos are timeless and classic, and can range into elegant, formal and dramatic. The Traditional Style of Wedding Photography usually calls for a shot list. The photographer will focus on a step-by-step checklist; to make sure they have posed everyone the bride and groom have selected to appear in each shot. The quality of those posed photos is the photographers main concern. Lots of attention is given towards expression, arrangement and lighting. Each person is arranged to look as great as they should. Each detail is “just-so”. This all takes time and planning. These posed shots needn't be stuffy and old-fashioned however. Just because the shots are planned, doesn't mean that they can't also be creative and contemporary in terms of angle, location, style and cropping. The main final product for traditional wedding photography style is a set of enlarged prints to be displayed in albums or in frames.
Photojournalistic:
The idea of photojournalism wedding photography is embedded in the name itself. Photojournalism is an approach based on truthful documentation: telling a story of the wedding day through the use photographs. Journalism found its way into weddings from news coverage photography after quality compact cameras and fine quality films were introduced to the market in the early 1970's. Today's digital cameras have only enhanced the ability of professional photographers to seize the unfolding moment in photographs. The concept of capturing the flow of events, rather then recreating it, has always been appealing to photographers, but film quality and equipment limitations prevented photojournalism to become a predominant style until the early 1990's. One of the hallmarks of the photojournalistic style is to take un-posed photos, many in which the subjects don't know they are being photographed, and it also includes images of places and things to vividly capture the setting and atmosphere. The main aim is to catch the real emotion, happiness and joy of the participants. The exact list of shots happens spontaneously.
A strict photojournalistic approach to weddings means that nothing is posed or set-up, there is no prepared shot list and if something is missed, it is gone. With this approach, the photographer is an artist who creates a beautiful and memorable set of photographs with which to remember your wedding.
Candid:
Candid photos are not snapshots. Each candid photo has its meaning and it is based on a photographer's vision. While true snapshots are usually limited to frontal facial expressions of people who know they are being photographed, candids are based on a whole variety of photographic techniques, mixed with a clearly set purpose of documenting the event with a unique photographer's vision. Photos can be taken from creative angles or with artistic techniques. The sequence in which the final images are presented tells the story.
