Our musical theatre ensemble class came about when we were preparing for the Mansfield ‘Remembering Roy McGillivray’ Concert last January. We received good feedback about the ensemble numbers in the show and had such fun that the young performers (and directors) decided they wanted to continue these classes. The class consists of members of all ages and abilities who study their individual instruments at Mansfield coming together in a friendly atmosphere and we have found as tutors working side by side with the pupils on stage engages them in a collaborative approach that encourages us all to perform well. Musical theatre demands commitment from performers to respond to direction in new areas such as stage presence, facial expression and the collaborative movement of intricate choreography as well as vocal coaching. As directors we work together, combining each other’s expertise in note-learning, staging and accompaniment in order to enable the performers to bring their general musicality and characterisation of roles to their audience. We appreciate the commitment and energy the young performers have shown over these past months in learning and practicing the new material and the confidence and creativity of their suggestions for this showcase. Thanks, too, to the parents for their support and cooperation. We have welcomed many new members since January and invite anyone who would like to become involved to get in touch.
